Philosophies
Master Gichin Funakoshi (known as the father of modern Karate) Said..."the ultimate aim of martial arts lies not in victory or defeat of ones opponents but in the perfection of the character of all of its participants." The emphasis is individual self perfection.
Similarly Grandmaster Hwang Kee said... "the goal of martial arts is to develop every aspect of the self."
Learn...
The takeaway from all of these masters wisdom is to learn self improvement, growth, and perfection through our martial arts training and practice. The path to those outcomes is self control and self awareness. Martial arts at its core is learning self control and self awareness; we strive to be aware and in control of our feelings, words, actions, and reactions. That awareness and control extends from ourself to the objects in our possessions, to the space around us, and to the situations we find ourselves in. The greater awareness and control we have ourselves, the greater the impact we can have in our lives and the lives of those around us. This path is intended for anyone that wants to learn. Age, sex, gender, size, color, culture, wealth, intelligence, and politics are irrelevent when choosing this path. On the training floor, the goal is the same. Work hard, work together, work to overcome.
Earn...
Now that we are on the path to self control, self improvement, and self awareness... we need to earn credibility, responsibility, and trust, from our instructors, classmates, and seniors. When the instructor looks at you as a student that is reliable, controlled, and safe, your classmates and seniors will see the same. This takes us into the leadership and role model stage of your training.
Return...
Now that credibility and trust have been established, we move to the last phase of our martial arts cycle... Return. A common tradition in many martial arts is the practice of passing on what you have learned to future students
